Examples of wood printing blocks collected and used by Joann Condino

Four centuries ago, traders via the silk and spice route brought hand-carved wooden printing blocks from India to the south of France. Since that time, wood block printed cloth has captured the hearts of Provence.

For the past thirty-five years, Joann Condino has developed a unique style using her own collection of antique blocks and is now printing a signature line of 100% linen and cotton fabrics in her northern Michigan studio. The inspiration for her palette comes from the luscious pine trees surrounding her studio, along with the colorful flower garden and the many birds and berries that flank the wrap-around porch.   Below is  a picture of Sharon Steiger  working on a wood block printed  and hand painted piece.
