Phoebe Moll, Ceramics
From the time I could remember I carried a sketchbook around. Doodling, drawing my surroundings and much more. As I got older the sketchbooks traveled further and became fuller. They lived in my backpacks, and were taken out during college lectures, on the bus, or just when I was sitting outside. My surroundings constantly inspired interesting patterns and
collections of shapes. When the sketchbooks became full, one of my favorite parts was flipping through the pages, tattered, worn, and full.
As my journey with ceramics continued, I intensively studied functional shapes and forms, digging deep into the idea of creating pieces that were meant to be used, cooked with and loved. Over time I began to experiment with different techniques, from sgraffito (carving) into the pieces, patterned glaze work and one day I began to paint the baby’s breath that was in my garden in front of me on a piece. And a whole new style of work began to take shape. It became amazing to take a simple shape, that can be used by someone daily, and paint all those doodles and designs upon them. All my work began to take a whole new life.
My most recent body of work was crafted with the intention of taking all those years of doodles and designs, and the classic ceramic forms and elevating them with hand painted patterns. Taking pieces you may very well use daily and filling them with a new bright, and interesting life. The vibrant colours and encompassing nature filled designs are made in hopes they will be
enjoyed daily, from a small little dish to place your rings, to the spoon rest next to your stove, or the large platter that hosts your favorite weeknight meals.
