Painting the Poetic Landscape
Painting the Poetic Landscape with Heidi Marshall
Dates and Time: August 6th and 7th from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm
Workshop Fee: $425
This two-day plein air workshop with artist Heidi Marshall will concentrate on capturing the beauty of atmospheric light. Every mood and every weather condition holds an opportunity to understand and express light in a way that is highly individual and expressive. Learning to see and feel the scene is part one. It involves creating a quiet space within. Part two involves your medium and how best to use your materials to get the results you want. This class involves exploring. It involves experimentation.

Heidi’s List of Materials
Please bring the medium of your choice. Whatever the medium, allow for a basic range of colors—making sure they include a variety of values …including some very dark values (not just black). If you need more instruction on this, call me at 313 550-0832. Everyone has different preferences for materials. For the purposes of this workshop any basic painting set like Windsor Newton is fine. For pastels, I prefer Ludwig and Nu pastel—at least a quantity of 40. A sketch book is also a good idea.
In addition, bring an array of small canvases or boards if painting in oil or acrylic. If doing pastels bring sanded paper (UArt or Lux Archival 400 grit).
Pastellists and watercolor painters should also bring a Masonite board and artist’s tape to mount paper. As far as watercolor paper goes—I love Arches Cold press and usually buy pads.
I’d prefer everyone to work within these surface sizes:
9 x 12, 12 x 16, or 11 x 14. Bring at least six canvases, boards or papers to work on, depending on your medium.
Come prepared with a variety of different sized and shaped brushes. Everyone should bring a portable easel. Pastel people should also bring a 70% bottle of isopropyl rubbing alcohol. Everything can be found on line at Dick Blick.
Essentials for everyone include a sun hat, sunscreen, bug spray, small collapsible table, paper towels or wet wipes, and as always, I will bring my husband’s famous cookies for the class.
Preparedness is one of the keys to success!!!
Look forward to working with you!!
