Painting Direct – Contemporary Impressionism en Plein Air with Heidi Marshall

Workshop Dates & Time: July 11 & 12, 2024 – 11AM to 4PM
Cost: $400

A two-day plein air class that concentrates on seeing and responding to and tackling the landscape. It also concentrates on you – and precisely where you are in your painting journey.

This class includes study of all the elements that make up a painting created in nature. The kind of study we never get enough of – namely value, composition, edges, juxtapositions, techniques, etc. We will talk about how to feel-out a painting in your mind’s eye, the importance of being in sync with not just seeing nature but responding to it, and finally having the courage and belief that you can express and create anything.

So much in painting centers around seeing, problem solving, expressing and not giving up on something you really want to express. We are going to work on achieving confidence—even when things don’t go exactly as planned.

Whether you are a seasoned plein air painter or a beginner – I will meet you on your level and you will go home with writings that will continue to help you improve.

Bring your medium of choice – a basic range of oils, acrylics, watercolors or pastels. Make sure you have enough darks. And by dark colors I mean very dark values.

Pastellists need to bring several Terry Ludwig Eggplant sticks—and at least 100 pastels of various values and colors. That’s a basic number in the pastel world.

Make sure you have enough small surfaces to paint on. I would not go bigger than 9 x 12.

Oil and Acrylic painters bring about 6 small canvases or boards. Watercolorists – I like Arches cold press pads. Pastellists – I use Bookman or UArt 250-400 Grit. Everyone bring a sketchbook and a portable easel. If you need a chair bring that too. Everyone please bring baby wipes and a small hand-held mirror, a sun hat, water bottles and a sack lunch. Lunch can also be purchased at the General Store.

Can’t wait to work with you. We work hard – and we have lots of fun.
